What to Do Immediately After Water Damage
The steps you take in the first minutes after discovering water damage can significantly limit how far the damage spreads.
Discovering water damage is stressful, but the first few minutes matter more than most people realize. Water spreads quickly — across floors, into baseboards, and eventually into wall cavities and subfloors. Acting promptly and safely can limit how far the damage travels and how much material is affected. Here's what to do, in order.
1. Make sure people are safe
Before anything else, make sure everyone in the home is safe. Don't step into standing water near electrical outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel. If you can safely reach the breaker without standing in water, turn off power to affected areas. Keep children and pets away from wet areas.
2. Stop the source if it's safe
If the water is coming from a plumbing failure and you can safely reach the main shutoff or the fixture's valve, turn it off. If the source is a storm or flooding from outside, there may be nothing to shut off — focus on protecting people and valuables and request professional help.
3. Protect valuables and furniture
Move valuables, electronics, and lightweight furniture away from wet areas if you can do so safely. Lift furniture onto blocks or foil squares to keep it from staining wet flooring. Don't attempt to move heavy items through standing water.
4. Document the situation
Take photos and notes of what's affected — rooms, materials, water level, and the source if known. This documentation is useful for your own records and for any conversations with your insurer.
5. Request professional help
Once people are safe and the source is stopped if possible, request a professional assessment. The full extent of water damage usually isn't visible — water hides in wall cavities, under flooring, and in framing — so a professional moisture assessment is the right next step.
